25 Healthy Ideas for your Easter Basket

25 Healthy Ideas for your Easter BasketReese’s or Cadbury eggs? Oh, wait! You’re trying to fit in a swimsuit, and don’t want that crap in your house. Introducing 25 healthy Easter basket ideas…

I was walking through Target with my two daughters the other day (groan!). First of all, I hate Target, because we walk in with a list of 5 things, and walk out $200 later.

Second of all, my kids automatically assume that every colorful candy is DESTINED to be in their belly. So, they ask me if we can get Reese’s peanut butter eggs. Or Cadbury caramel eggs (never the creme). Or pastel peanut M&Ms…

I’m not one of those crazy, super-health conscious moms who REFUSES to let my kids eat any sugar. Even though I’m also a health coach. Nah, leave that to Paleo folks or those who have eliminated everything but protein and vegetables.

If there’s anything I’ve learned on my personal journey to losing 100 pounds, it is that life is to be enjoyed. I call this “body bliss”. Whether that means extra time with loved ones, or the sweet sensation of our favorite food. Both are part of life.

Yet, I would be lying if I said I don’t cringe and die a little bit on the inside when my kids want to eat sugar all day long. I feel them, though. After all, I have my own complicated relationship with sugar. And, sugar is just about everywhere!

Before we launch into some healthy Easter basket ideas, what do your Easter traditions usually involve? Most of us have treasured memories of our own holiday traditions as kids, yet not all of those traditions get passed down to our own children.

One of my favorite memories of Easter growing up was getting together as a family to make easy Easter baskets out of colored construction paper. I heard that up until recently, my parents and siblings still did that fun tradition.

Also, one of my favorite healthy “treats” from inside the homemade basket was home-popped popcorn. Popcorn was kinda a big deal in my house, and Mom always made it on the stove-top, cooked in oil, and sprinkled generously with melted real butter and salt.

Delicious!

That popcorn became the “grass” upon which our other treats would sit. And, which we would happily munch on before the hard work of our Easter egg hunt.

Speaking of hunts, here is a photo from one of our first outdoor Easter egg hunts! This will be tricky this year, what with our dog, Betsy, a bunch of hungry squirrels, and Helena, our backyard momma hawk.

Anyway, I promised you that I would share 25 healthy Easter basket ideas. Here they are!

  1. Homemade popcorn
  2. Plastic eggs with coins, hair ties, or marbles
  3. Guac deviled eggs
  4. Bubble wands
  5. Nutella protein bites
  6. Yogurt strawberries
  7. Bird food (like this savory almond and pepita snack)
  8. Fidgets
  9. Play doh
  10. Rice Krispie bunnies
  11. Easter egg popsicles from Eatsamazing
  12. Pineapple Peeps (the only way I’d let my kids eat “Peeps”!)
  13. Carrot sticks
  14. Oatmeal peanut butter eggs from SavyNaturalista
  15. Butterfly Snacks from Juggling with Kids
  16. Temporary superhero tatoos
  17. Books
  18. Kid coupons (like these awesome ones from Lasting Thumbprints!)
  19. Balloons (water balloon fight?)
  20. Bouncy balls
  21. Gum balls
  22. Mini nail polish
  23. Carrot fudge (aka Indian halwa) from My Heart Beets
  24. Glitter glue
  25. Chapstick

You’ll notice that some of the healthy Easter items are food, and some are NOT food. That is because treats come in many forms, and not all of them are food.

What? You mean, you don’t have to stuff your face with chocolate, ice cream, cake and the like to have a fun holiday?! I know, it took me awhile to realize this.

Yet, as parents, we are role models for our kids.

What will you be putting in your children’s Easter baskets this year? Please don’t say “Peeps”. Share with me in the comments!

  1. Those eggs that you hunt for during Easter? Why not include some in the basket. Make sure they’re painted all pretty. Here’s how to make the perfect hard boiled egg .

  2. Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Carrot sticks are a cute idea to leave for the bunny, but I’m not sure my kiddos want them in their own baskets! But, the PlayDoh is a great idea!!!

    1. Yes, kids might be a bit more excited about play doh than carrots! Though, it is a good way to tie into the Easter bunny 🐰
