Have you heard the term thigh gap? According to Wikipedia.org, a thigh gap in women is a space between the inner thighs when standing upright with both knees touching. Not surprisingly, the trend was born after a Victoria’s Secret runway highlighted rail-thin women with generous thigh gaps.
I don’t aspire to have a thigh gap. This is because my whole life was ruled by thigh SMACK. That’s right- my thighs were BFFs while I was growing up. They were practically fused together, which caused some interesting problems.
If you have ever rubbed the material off of your favorite pairs of jeans just by walking, you know what I mean by thigh SMACK.
If you are physically uncomfortable wearing a skirt without a pair of shorts underneath, you know what I mean by thigh SMACK.
If you have ever had heat rash at the juncture of your thighs, you know what I mean by thigh SMACK.
I must have subconsciously craved thigh gap in my younger days. After all, my beanpole-thin best friends were the poster children for it. Not only could you see that their legs were two distinct entities, but you could also see a generous ray of light shining in between!
I envied my friends their thinner bodies, but don’t recall desperately wanting to see the light of day between my thighs. Really, I would have been happy with wearing clothes that were not labeled plus.
If you struggle with thigh SMACK, is it reasonable for you to yearn for the space between? According to articles on Huffington Post, not really.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t yearn for a time when you can wear a pair of short shorts without flinching. I was shocked the day I discovered that my knees actually had a shape that wasn’t ROUND. In fact, I urge you to challenge yourself to get closer to the body you want. To find targeted exercises to strengthen and tone your thighs, visit Nice Stems.
What I don’t advise you to do is reach for a goal that someone else set for themselves. You are not competing with them. You are competing with yourself.
Forget thigh gap. Forget thigh SMACK.
Visualize how you feel when your jeans fit just right.
Imagine being on the beach with your beautiful thighs exposed to the sunlight.
Picture yourself wearing clothes you love, without wearing undergarments to “smooth the rough spots”.
You don’t have to dream of a day when you are comfortable in your own body. You can work on creating that future today. More on that here.
By the way, even though I lost 100 pounds, I still don’t have Tina Turner legs. That’s ok by me. My strong legs have allowed me to run 5Ks, travel the world, dance in my living room, chase after my toddlers, and enjoy my life. This is not about perfection. This is about progress.
