Healthy Halloween Treats that Will not Scare your Scale

Healthy Halloween Treats that won't Scare your Scale

Is there any better day than one dedicated entirely to dressing up as someone else and getting free candy for it? Candy, candy, candy!!!

On October 31, my three siblings and I would trudge out in the dark cold in our homemade Halloween costumes and search for that elusive treasure. That treasure was the one or two special houses every year that would hand out (GASP) a full-size candy bar!

Well, Halloween kinda sucks if you are on a diet.

Maybe you try to buy candy to hand out that you hate, you avoid the office candy bowl like the plague, and you pray that your little trick-or-treaters won’t ever go to sleep. Because, you know, when they go to sleep, candy seems to disappear. It must be the work of the evil candy monster…. (namely you)

How do you avoid derailing your sweet cravings when sweets surround you? Here are 5 healthy Halloween treats that won’t scare your scale.

  1. Healthy gummies

Sure, you can hit up Trader Joe’s for something organic and all-natural, but why not include some ingredients that might chase away the cold bug? This yummy gummy recipe includes gelatin (lots of protein), honey, tart cherry juice (helps with sleep) and elderberry syrup.

  1. Gluten-free fudgy brownies

You may have seen me share this amazing recipe on Fox News earlier this spring. In any case, this is a one-bowl recipe full of healthy fats that is guaranteed to make your kids scream (with joy!)

  1. Fun apple mouths

While most folks salivate over pumpkin this season, I’m all about #teamapple. You know what they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Apples are crunchy goodness, especially when they are dressed up to be kid-friendly.

Cut some apple slices, slap some peanut or almond butter on those little ghouls, and put slivered almonds, yogurt raisins or marshmallows for “teeth”. See this and other healthy recipes via Skinny Mom.

  1. Red Wine

That’s right. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to possibly protect your heart, according to this infographic (see full image at https://www.pinterest.com/pin/377598749987156425/)

Benefits of Red Wine

While I generally don’t advocate drinking anything other than water when you are committed to healthy eating, red wine is the least deadly of most alcoholic drinks. If it’s good for the French, it’s good for us, n’est pas?

  1. Scary Movie Night

What, you thought this was all food-based treats? One of the biggest challenges (and savior) for women who are looking to improve their eating habits is exploring non-food rewards. Pop in a scary movie like The Exorcist, Poltergeist (classic or revamped), Friday the 13th, or even The Ring for some late-night thrills. Extra bonus points for cuddling with your significant other.

    1. Ha ha, thanks, Carol! I don’t imagine any women would argue the wine one with me. After all, it IS our adult kool-aid. The gummies were a fun find, too!

  1. I love the gluten free fudgy brownies idea. I tried this with my family and no one could tell the difference and it’s so much healthier. Thanks for the recipes.

    1. Hi, Lori, and welcome! I’m glad your family enjoyed the brownies 😀 I tend to use half the sugar called for to make it even healthier. My girls can’t even tell…
