Flying Solo with Weight Loss

Who will catch you“Who is gonna wipe away the tears you cry?

Who is gonna love you, baby, as good as I?”

Heart

Will you go it alone?  It’s a proven fact that successful weight loss is easier with a great support system.  In today’s world, fitness trainers, dieticians or medical doctors often act as a defacto support system.  For several reasons, these people might not be the best choice.  A number of people revealed to me that their doctors did not help them at all in their weight loss journey.

When you jump solo into a new weight loss plan, who will be there to catch you when you fall?

In the final series of our Health Checklist, we will be focusing on WHO can help when it comes to your weight loss program.

Take out a pen and answer the 3 questions below.

WHO:

1. Will take away from your goal?

We take for granted that our family will automatically support our desire to lose weight.  However, not all families can or will appreciate the impact your change will have on their lives.  It can be frustrating to have a spouse who refuses to eat healthier foods or children who start a war whenever the treats get thrown away.  While you can’t divorce your family, you should make it clear how your goals will impact their lives.  Sometimes that may mean a tough decision to avoid certain foods, experiment with new foods, or even just make a separate meal for yourself.

Some friends might also become less friendly when they see your success.  While I have not experienced this personally, I know of other successful losers who say their friends started making snide or rude comments about their healthier lifestyle.  If your current friendship revolves around food and negative comments, then it’s time to find new relationships!

WHO:

2. Will encourage you the most?

People who encourage you are like lilies- they brighten your world and always bring a smile to your face.  Find your lilies and spend more time with them.  They may not want to know everything there is to know about your eating and exercise habits, but they will lift you up when you are feeling discouraged.

You could be surprised by who ends up becoming your biggest fan.  I have had acquaintances congratulate me and support me at the most unexpected moments.  Do not be afraid to reach out to people outside of your normal connections.  If you need a place to start, join me on Facebook.  If you prefer a more personal interaction, why not schedule a free strategy session to discover how I can help you feel and look their your best?

WHO:

3. Will you become?

There is one single technique that can help you reach your goal faster.  This technique is rarely mentioned in traditional diet programs.  This technique is called “visualization”.

Here’s what you do.  Imagine yourself at your goal weight.  Imagine how your daily routine might change as a result of this.  How does it feel to wear more fashionable clothes in average or small sizes?  How does it feel to join a team sport or simply chase your child/grandchildren around the yard?  Imagine how friends, family, co-workers and even strangers now treat you at your goal weight.  How does it feel in terms of your confidence and overall happiness?

Write down one sentence that describes what you saw.  Write the sentence in present tense, as if you have already reached your goal.  For example, your sentence could be “I enjoy sun-bathing in the Caribbean with my brand-new bikini to show off my cut abs and toned arms.”

There will be times when you are so discouraged you are ready to give up.  Keep your sentence somewhere close by, and reaffirm it at those times.  You are worth it.  Weight loss is not a rejection of who you, but a way to refine and become a better version of you.

Who will you become this year?

    1. Yes, Liza, the same principles for losing weight can easily apply to succeeding at any goal. In fact, I am coming up with an article on how losing weight is like job hunting. I have plenty of experience in both areas! Thanks for commenting.
