Have a Booty-Shaking Blast with these 10 Youtube Dance Videos
Gotta dance? Yet, you’re afraid to show your mom-bod in the clubs with the 20-somethings that drink too much and wear too little? No worries. As someone who lost 100 pounds while dancing to the beat, I know the challenge with public displays of movement. Far be it from me to stop you from feeling like a 20-year old while embarrassing your kids in your home.
Let’s start with some basics. Though I was a veteran of Dancing to the Oldies by “the weight saint” Richard Simmons by the time I was 10 years old, I wanted to expand my horizons a little bit. What better way to enjoy myself (and explore my heritage) than with some Zumba? My early days of Zumba were inspired by Kathy Smith. Believe me, she looked nothing like this:
I still love Kathy Smith! By the way, if you live in Minnesota like me, you can get top-notch Zumba instruction by Cathy at CM’s Fitness in Richfield. Believe me, she will have you feeling like a Latin lover in no time. Plus, she throws great parties at different locations throughout the Twin Cities.
Like at the Dance Mile on August 6, 2016. Want to get discounted tickets to the Dance Mile? Use discount code “Weightless” for $10 off.
Then, what? After you get your Latin lover on, why not explore other parts of the globe? I married a man from Calcutta, so my natural inclination was to explore Masala Bhangra. No, not exactly the overly dramatic Bollywood type of dancing, but something more fitness and fun. I actually met Sarina Jain several years ago after taking a dance class through Edina Community Education. My older daughter, Jade, also came with.
Check it out!
Speaking of dancing around the globe, maybe you just had a baby, or need to calm down from your normal HIIT routine? No problem. Belly dance is not only a great way to tone your stubborn mid-section, but it is also a more low impact (and sexy!) way to get your groove on. I first tried out belly dance with my older sister when she brought an ancient video back from the library. Hey, why not?
Admittedly, we didn’t look much like this woman, but we worked our shawls and finger cymbals like bosses!
Let’s take a break. Maybe you’re thinking that you got stuff to do, and NO WAY will you look as hot as any of these people. Maybe you have a house to clean, or are long past the days of midriff-baring tops. Here is some (grand)motherly inspiration to encourage you to cook it up in the kitchen!
Or, maybe you feel like you can’t rock out to Vanilla Ice like a grandma? To each his own. Why not rock out to Bruno Mars, like inspirational speaker and author Theresa Rose?
OK, I totally understand. You’re a stay-at-home mom, and are so busy wrangling the kids and trying to keep sane that you surely don’t have time to shake it? Think again! This extremely pregnant mom gets her daughter in on the fun (or is it the other way around?). By the way, I love to turn up the tunes in my own house with my two girls for our very own living room dance party. It was my daughter, Jade, who introduced me to the infamous Whip Nae Nae dance. Try it out!
Isn’t that little girl adorable??? But, maybe your children are older and much too cool for such escapades. However, they simply cannot resist fun choreography to cool current music by Beyoncé. Well, direct them over to The Fitness Marshall and start burning the rug. I found this guy from a Facebook friend. Who says there’s nothing worthwhile on Facebook?
Not everyone can get choreography right, and sometimes The Fitness Marshall goes a bit fast. Which is why I LOVE Keaira LaShae, who slows it down and helps you get your booty RIGHT. I have been following her for awhile, and keep going back to her easy yet fun workouts. Plus, she calls her followers QUEENS. I know that’s right.
Oh, and she also infuses a bit of Reggae flavor in this fun routine. She may be a bit fond of twerking, so if that type of thing ain’t for you…. Try it anyway!
Now that we’ve gone WAY beyond the basics of dance, maybe you are ready to up your game with some tools. As in, a weighted hula hoop. I started hoop-dancing several years ago through community education with this lady, Jessica Bessette. I had never been able to hula hoop as a child with those cheap plastic things, and I found a new freedom in being able to do so with the weighted ones. Everyone in my class was able to hoop with the heavier ones. Plus, it’s a great work-out for your core muscles.
And, you get to try out some tricks. They are surprisingly easy to make and travel with, as well.
No matter how you shake it, dance is one of the best ways to improve your fitness, fuel your passion, and strut like a sexy beast. Plus, check out the amazing 9 health benefits you didn’t know about.

Which is why you should celebrate International Dance Day by shaking with one of my 10 best YouTube dance videos. I may not have been a dancing fool as a young girl, but it was always a passion of mine. By the way, Jade and I went to see So You Think You Can Dance when it came to Minneapolis one year, and it was amazing to see the talent out there. If I had to binge watch any show, it was this one.

These videos sure are great for losing weight. Can’t wait to try them out.
Glad you enjoy them, Roy. Love spreading more joy and dance to other peoples’ lives!
Hi Jenn! I can’t wait to try some of these out. I also loved Kathy Smith back in the day and owned all her videos. I credit her with helping me get all my baby weight off.
That is so cool about Kathy Smith, Sara! Her workouts were fun and just enough challenge to get a jumpstart on a new fitness routine. Have fun shaking your money-maker, Sara.
That goofy mom was so adorable! I’m imagining my mother do that kind of dance. Thank you for sharing all those videos. I had fun watching all of them. Dancing while being able to make your body fit and sexy is one of the best form of exercise. It’s just dull exercising without the beat of music. I wonder if you tried everything in your post?
Hi, Justin! Dancing has always been my favorite ways to move. And, yes, I have tried just about every one of those (except the goofy mom- she’s an original!)
