The best part of Christmas morning is gobbling up every single piece of chocolate in your stocking….or, you could try these healthier stocking stuffers.
Every December, on a cold and snowy morning, I would tumble out of bed alight with excitement. Long before the sun would come up, I would be there, eagerly peering into the depths of possibility.
Inside of my Christmas sock.
Christmas is a special time of year. But, the most special part of December 25 for me was not just opening gifts, or having a homemade “Big Breakfast” with my family. It wasn’t going to Midnight Mass the night before to sing the story of Christ’s birth.
The most special moment of Christmas for me was waking up at 5am and running to see what was in my stocking.
My stocking has remained with me for as long as I can remember. Yes, people used to call me “Jenny” (I hated it!) The stocking holds a special place in my heart.
There were no rules for it. As children, we were not allowed to open up any gifts before Ma and Dad woke up. Considering that we went to bed around 2am on Christmas Eve, it’s no wonder my parents preferred to sleep in!
What we were allowed to do was scour the depths of our stockings for the certain sweet goodies inside. These goodies could be coins, candy, or even chapstick. The stocking stuffers changed throughout the years, but my feelings towards these special little treats did not.
The coins and chapstick would be saved for later. But, the candy was feverishly consumed as I waited for everyone else to get up. A ravenous breakfast eater, I hated waiting more than an hour after I woke up to eat. My folks did their best to sleep until 7am(!), and we only ate breakfast after the gifts were opened. Luckily, there was candy to stave off my hunger.
As you get ready to finalize your Christmas celebrations this week, pay special attention to what goes inside the stocking. Especially if you are a mom of little kids.
I’m not going to be a grinch, and suggest you put toothbrushes in your kids’ stockings. BA-HUMBUG!
However, being the responsible health coach I am, I feel it’s important to share some stocking stuffers ideas for those who read this blog (and are striving to be health nuts).
As a mom who used to struggle with my weight, I am more mindful of what I put in my daughters’ stockings. Like their mama, they love their chocolate, especially on Christmas morning 🙂
Chocolate is not evil, but a treat does not always have to be food.
Remember, Christmas memories are special because of the feeling they provoke in you. The stocking was special to me, because it was something I could savor that was all mine and could give me instant gratification. It also carries my childhood and the memories of all those mornings I enjoyed with my family.

My mom would always give me books, but gramma would slip in a small piece of chocolate.
As a big time book-worm, I would have been thrilled by the books! Thanks for sharing, Michelle. Happy holidays!
