The hardest and most rewarding job is that of Mom. Here is the ultimate guide to a Mother’s day gift that will keep Mom happy and healthy all month.
Every year, the dreaded question comes up. “Mom, what do you want for Mother’s Day?”
I know it sounds cliche, but I literally have everything I want.
- Which means my husband might buy me a bunch of scented soaps I don’t need (or use).
- And, my children might get some beautiful flowers for me.
- Or, another gorgeous piece of jewelry will find its place in my overloaded jewelry box.
I am grateful for all these beautiful Mother’s Day gifts of appreciation.
Yet, the way to most moms’ hearts is not in soaps, flowers, or jewelry. Not to mention one of those overpriced brunches!
You may have heard that experiences are actually a better gift than things. If you haven’t, Fast Company wrote a great article on this.
In a nutshell, the three reasons that experiences make better gifts than things is because they are more unique, they are less comparable, and they create opportunities for social interactions.
Have you ever felt, as a mom, that you don’t have any friends? Or, don’t know how to reach out to someone? I know I have.
While being a mom is the best thing in the world, it can also be very lonely.
Which is why I searched the Twin Cities for the best gifts- and few of them are things! Most of them are experiences or events that will improve not just your day, but also your overall health.
From your friendly neighborhood health coach, and fellow mom. By the way, if you ever struggle with listing out what you want- relax! Just point your loved ones to this article 🙂
In order to make it easiest for you, I have also listed these Mother’s Day gift experiences out by categories: Fitness, Fun, and Food.
The Ultimate Guide to Mother’s Day Gift Experiences
Fitness
Fit4Mom
It is no secret that I have found my fitness tribe through Fit4Mom. Not only have I been enjoying the HIIT classes while my kids are at school, but I will also be training with their run club next month.
Even better, in celebration of the week leading up to Mother’s Day, Fit4Mom is holding free classes all week! If you’re an early bird like me, you could join us at 5:45 AM for the kid-free Stroller Strides, bring the kids in the stroller later in the morning, or even join a Fit4Baby evening class.
Most of the workouts are in parks outdoors. That means you get a bonus shot of Vitamin D along with your fit mom bod.
Here is the official low-down on Fit4Mom. Tell Kay I sent you (or I may even see you there)!

Zultimate Self Defense Class
One of the cool things about being a health coach is I get to meet a lot of really cool wellness folks at expos. I met Sensei Ben at The Moms Rock Expo several years ago, and am a big supporter of his local business.
Did I mention I used to be a green belt in karate?
Both of my kids have taken summer camps at the studio, and have loved knocking down “Bob”, the mannequin, with their front kicks.
One of the most important skills you can learn is to how to defend yourself. Luckily, most of us will never have to deal with a physical confrontation. Yet, having the skill to know how to handle potentially dangerous situations will be a Mother’s Day gift that never stops giving.
And, having the inner confidence to know you can beat up bad guys is priceless!
I highly encourage not just the moms reading this, but also their daughters, to join the self defense class held by Sensei Ben at Zultimate in Richfield.
Women’s Self-Defense begins on May 16th from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. The course runs four consecutive Wednesdays (May 16th, 23rd, and 30th, as well as June 6th), and each week will focus on different topics and concepts. Although self-defense is serious, we’ll approach it in a safe and fun way that will have you smiling when you leave.
What you will learn:
- The four ranges of an attack and developing strategies for each stage
- Some basic thinking you can adopt in order to prevent most attacks
- Basic striking and blocking
- Some simple escapes and tools you can use
- How to think about different scenarios
- Understanding components of the psychology of an attack
Along the way, you’ll probably also notice that it’s a great workout that will improve your balance, coordination, and strength. You may sleep better and have more peace of mind knowing that you have some tools to protect yourself and your loved ones. And you may even notice that you leave the class feeling energized, refreshed, and with more mental clarity. Plus, you’ll get to meet some new people and have fun!
The whole course is only $59 and you can register here www.zultimate.as.me/selfdefenseforwomen or contact Ben Thomas at edina@zultimate.com or (612) 564-8849.
Child and Family Chiropractic
It’s hard to be fit when you have a backache or can’t move freely due to neck strain or migraines.
Dr. Felicia Conner and I have known each for several years courtesy of a local networking group, and she just has a winning smile and attitude about health!
You may find it weird that I am recommending chiropractic care as a Mother’s Day gift. However, most of us moms can benefit from an adjustment, so we can keep doing what we do best- being mom!
In celebration of Mother’s Day, Child and Family Chiropractic is offering free exams for new patient moms in May. To redeem this offer, schedule a visit on her site, and mention the Mother’s Day ad.
Fun
Nothing says fun like taking a boat out on the water and enjoying a beautiful view.
Which is why I am excited to share about Inspired Thinking LLC’s Barbeque and Boat Cruise on Sunday, May 20 in Excelsior, MN.
This cruise is held by a friend and my former speaking coach Vitalia Bryn Pundyk and her business partner, Julie Hill.
Not only do you get to enjoy lunch and time on the water, but there are four themes we will go over, including makeup and wardrobe tips, meditation and money matters. Personally, I have experienced great shifts in both my feelings towards meditation and how I view money in both my business and personal life.
I am a VIP sponsor of this fun cruise, and can guarantee we’ll have a great time.
To register, go to Inspired Thinking. The cruise happens rain or shine (but let’s plan on shine). Note to mompreneur friends- there will also be time for networking, so bring your cards.
Food
I would be remiss if I did not include some way to eat healthier, without going insane, right? Finish planning out your Mother’s Day brunch, and get ready to kick your summer meal planning into high gear.
During the summer, I find myself loathe to cook much, and since I am no lover of raw veggies, that means creative ways to eat balanced meals both my kids and I can love.
Last year, I held a private Scrumptious Salads workshop, and I am bringing it back this year.
This is not your ordinary salad workshop, where some bikini model tells you 50 ways she loves kale while eating raw carrots and extolling the benefits of balsamic vinaigrette.
Nope, when I do salads, I do them with a mix of roasted veggies, whole grains and delicious dressings you will love. Loads of flavor are packed into these unique salads! In addition to the recipes for the salads, you will get 3 creations to take home with you.
Please note: this workshop is unique, because I literally customize our creations to the people who sign up. That means- if you have gluten or dairy concerns, none of our ingredients will include those things! If you are vegetarian, you will still have plenty of tasty ingredients to mix and match.
Space is limited to only 8 people, and you must be willing to say hi to our dog, Betsy. This is perfect for work-at-home or business moms who like afternoon gatherings. Click the image below to register. See you there!
